👂🇨🇳 Beginner Chinese Listening: Epic Website 🇨🇳👂
Part 3: the best free website out there for Mandarin Chinese beginner & intermediate students (~HSK1 to HSK4). Includes a pdf of the entire "A Journey to the West" series!
Hi, fellow Mandarin Chinese students! 👋
Today I come with the last part of the Beginner Chinese Listening Series.
Here, I have the pleasure to present to you the ultimate website that you can use to improve your Chinese for free! It is a great alternative to other paid services like DuChinese, so I really recommend you guys check it out 😊
🏆 Best Website Ever 🏆
💫 Little Fox Chinese (recommended by The Heavenly Path)
Site aimed at helping children learn Chinese whose content consists of video stories divided into 5 levels, with the last level reaching around 2,500 character 😳. Each of these levels has its own learning guide and objectives so you know what to expect from them.
All videos have subtitles (mandarin + pinyin, then only mandarin for higher levels), vocabulary lists, and transcriptions with translations. They even have downloadable PDFs with selectable text so you can read these also using Yomichan 😉
The stories can be standalone ones or part of a series like the classic Journey to the West, which is amazing! 🤩 In case you are interested in reading the site’s transcriptions as a novel, I have saved you the work and downloaded and combined all the 108 stories’ PDFs into one file.
The first two levels are a bit childish and repetitive, but The Heavenly Path guide strongly suggests going through all of them, since they mainly teach useful, high frequency vocabulary 👍.
⚠ A few downsides ⚠️
It is important to note that this website has three small downsides:
To view the content, you need to create an account.
To use the site on smartphones or tablets, a subscription is required, which is quite pricey. ➡️ An alternative to bypass this is to view the videos on their YouTube channel. However, some of these do not contain subtitles like the website, so keep that in mind and download the PDFs in advance!
To view the content in traditional Chinese, there is not option. Nonetheless, you can use add-ons on the web browser to solve this.
I hope you enjoyed today’s article! Feel free to let me know what you thought about it 🙏
I really wish a version of this existed for Japanese! If I find something similar I'll make sure to let you know 😉
Happy listening and see you again with more valuable content,
